Language learners see vocabulary as being a very important part of
language learning. It is estimated that to cope well in English, a
second language learner would need around 5000 words. Vocabulary
teaching and learning must fit into the broader framework of a
language course. Vocabulary needs to be taught through listening and
speaking, by having to produce language in speaking and writing and
developing fluency. The teacher’s role is to focus on most useful
vocabulary, provide strategy training for low frequency vocabulary,
ensure that vocabulary has a chance to occur at all time and help
learners take control of their own vocabulary learning.
