The teaching of English Grammar has been a point of debate amongst the
teaching fraternity for a long time, the bone of contention being
whether grammar should be formally taught or not. It is very important
to realize that the grammar of a language cannot be treated as a
separate entity. It is language itself. Whenever we hear, speak, read
or write we are using grammar. However just the knowledge of grammar
will not ensure the ability to communicate, it is the ability to
perform or use this knowledge that will ensure fluency. Therefore
grammar needs to be contextualized and made functional.
Students may not always know the labels of grammar but need to know
the correct usage. The teacher’s knowledge of grammar will help him or
her to know what is being served to the students, the areas that need
more attention and if the need arises to formally explains terms and
labels.
